I just about dropped the ball on this one! Operation Red
Sleigh, 2016 is here once again. I just about lost track
of time !!!
The Sleigh Ride is drawing near, I think I hear the jingle
of sleigh bells in the distance! Or was that me dropping
the christmas balls.
1) Our primary concern is the long route (100k) As you all
know, per previous emails, that route has been redrawn.
Please see the below link for route locations. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/7869194
2)KISS principle on comms this year. See attached ICS 205.
VIPER RADIO CACHE on order and approved. 442.825 (82.5hz)
primary, 145.250 (88.5hz) seconday, 147.555 (csq), if all
else quits)- No cross band, or field repeaters or crazy
pet tricks. maybe some folks playing HF on 7.232 lsb using
3) Looks like the forecast is calling for 95 degrees and
a chance of PM storms, mostly sunny. Dress and plan accordingly!
4) For those with MotoTrbo capability, I still hope we can
test the EVTS-DIR simplex TG. I will say that a mobile can
hit the Greensboro TRBO repeater over 70%of the route, HTs
are hit and miss. Probably just plan on using the Guil Main
talkgroup for this one. Also the Brown Summit repeater is
as hit / miss as the Greensboro DMR repeater
5) Public safety primary comms will be on the P-25 VIPER
radio system using EVENTS Delta 1 as primary and EVENTS
Delta 2 as secondary.
6) Each rest stop and support position will have 1, 800mhz
radios. 1 from the state cache on the VIPER Delta 1. User
selectable to Delta 2..
For those that want to go above and beyond, see below! Otherwise,
not planning on bringing the entire shack / house this year!
Dont forget mast, tripod, antennas and feed line. With the
comm bus mast and the relay mast being up 50ft. I'm comfortable
with 15 - 20ft of mast at RS 1, RS 2, RS 4. RS 3 is the
furthest away 9.5 miles with potential for terrain issues.
RS 3 will get a little extra help with mast, antenna and
feed line, plus a tripod base.
The plan is (if staffing allows) 2 operators at each rest
stop (3 rest stops, total). Rest stop 3 get used twice.
Brian Lowe (KI4IDJ) said he would take drag - last rider
- tail end support. Need 2 that dont mind roving / sagging
the route if possible and 1 that doesnt mind hanging out
with the bike tech dude. Probably have Dub and Greg work
the back up command post.
All in all looking for about 12-14 folks. The more that
I think that's it. Please call me or email me with any questions
Thanks to all,
Route Maps and assignments and more details will be forthcoming.

Have you looked at the EMCOMM Challenge Award offered in
this year's North Carolina QSO Party?
Please see: http://ncqsoparty.org/index.php?id=rules
We know that the qualifications for this award can be a
little confusing, here are the highlights:
1 - This is a tag-on award and is not a category.
2 - One emergency minded person pre-registers and becomes
the contact for his/her team.
3 - The contact person solicits individuals or clubs that
are or will be operating in one of the NCQP categories for
a county in the chosen emergency management area. (mobiles
or expeditions that will operate across area boundaries
cannot be used)
4 - When the individual or club submits their log they will
enter the team name in the Club field of their Cabrillo
file.(one team name only)
5 - Scores of the individual logs will be added together
to form total points for this award.
6 - When a winner is chosen the contact person will receive
the award and can share between participants of the group.
As to date we have not received any pre-registrations. (see
rules page linked above)
This is a great opportunity to test portability, preparedness
and for leaders to learn more about their resources.
As part of the digital operations W4DW and NC4QP will include
MT63-1K. Stay tuned for possible schedules.
Tnx es 73,
